The Red Devils succumbed to their 10th defeat of the season as they were swatted aside 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford. It was their fourth loss in six league home games since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November and signalled the first time since the 1893-94 season – when the club was called Newton Heath – that United have lost six of their first 12 home games in a season.

"I am not naïve. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. We have to acknowledge that and change that," Amorim told a press conference. "In 10 games in the Premier League we won three, I know that. Imagine this for a fan of Man United, imagine this for me. You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that. We need to survive this moment. I know that."

United had lost three of their previous four home games, succumbing to Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, while it took a 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo to prevent them losing at home to Southampton, the weakest team in the Premier League, on Thursday. Amorim solemnly admitted that most teams his side have faced are simply better than them. "The opponents are better than us in many details, we cannot be consistent," he added. "I am not helping my players in the moment. It is a hard moment, We have to acknowledge we are in a very difficult situation, all the bad records, losing games at home, losing in Premier League, we are underperforming."
DID YOU KNOW?
United had just one shot on target in the 90 minutes against Brighton, Bruno Fernandes' equaliser from the penalty spot. The coach was powerless to unpack why his team were struggling so much despite having the second-highest wage bill in the league and spending around £600 million ($730m) on players in the last three years. Amorim added: "It is hard to explain, we have to acknowledge the moment and not go around the problem. Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any club in the Premier League, never mind for Manchester United. It is a really hard moment but we have to continue."
